The Debating Society of Greece, the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe and the Association for Democracy in the Balkans present Thessaloniki Open 2014, part of the official programme of the European Youth Capital 2014.
Thessaloniki Open 2014 is an international debate tournament where over 120 students from all over Europe will compete in argumentation in the English language. The judges will be experienced debaters who have won European and World championships from Greece and abroad.
The contestants will take part in 5 preliminary rounds and the 8 best teams will qualify for the semi-finals, which will determine the four teams of the final. The topics are announced 15 minutes before the debates start and speakers are randomly drawn to argue in favour or against the topic. This practice helps contestants develop their critical thinking skills and their ability to access multiple perspectives of contemporary issues while arguing for positions that they do not necessarily agree with.
All tournament debates, which will be open to the general public, will be live streamed online via Youtube Live and the final will take place in a public space in downtown Thessaloniki and will be televised.
The tournament is an opportunity for the contestants to meet the city of Thessaloniki which will host the World Universities Debating Championship, one of the largest student events in the world, in December 2015.
